We had the pleasure of getting to work with Vimeo on their new business cards. Among the options we talked about was the Silver Foil Board, one of our most popular choices in our Unique Plus line of cards.

The Process

Our Silver Foil Board paper is specially sourced for our HP Indigo 5500 press. Because our ink’s are translucent, they pick up the metallic qualities of the paper! We also have the ability to lay down white ink in certain areas where we don’t want the foil effect to show through. This is how we achieve the metallic effect on the Vimeo logo. The HP Indigo is an amazing piece of technology; it allows us to revive print and transform it from a boring necessity to a luxury, at a price that everyone can afford.

After Larry, our Production Manager, finishes imposing and printing the sets of cards, we laminate them with a thin film of plastic to protect the ink. This process is time-consuming but an important step in making an amazing product. Then, we trim them down to size and package them for shipping. We want to thank Vimeo for working with us – the end result is awesome!

When we began looking for a new building we had a hard time finding something that would fit. We needed space, attached production area, a creative environment, garage access and so much more. 195 Maestri Rd. in Tontitown turned out to be a perfect fit. It wasn’t much to look at before we got started on it, but we had a vision for what it could be. With input from the whole team and weeks of planning we designed a space that will suit our growth needs for years to come. Check it out!

A couple of weeks ago we announced that we’d be printing photo books for Paige’s trip to New York for Fashion Week 2012. We just finished designing and printing the book – they turned out amazingly. We used matte lamination for the covers to protect them from wear and the pages are printed on 15pt Ice Pearl paper. This paper is gorgeous, photo-quality and has a superb, shimmering effect.

We just dropped them in the mail – if you were one of the lucky ones to sign up then you should get yours early next week! Lots of people get confused when it comes to color printing – and for good reason. To get started, let’s talk about CMYK. Each of these letters refer to a color; Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. Why is a K used to represent the color black? For a quick answer check out this CMYK article.

CMYK is a color model used in the majority of digital and offset printers. Using these four colors it’s possible to create lots of colors – but not all. You see, the more ink colors you have the more colors you can reproduce in print. The problem with having, say, 10 colors on your press is that it’s quite expensive. So, how do you get some very specific colors without having to stock lots of inks? Well, that’s where Pantone comes in.

Pantone

Pantone is a company best known for its Pantone Matching System (PMS). Pantone colors are pre-mixed using a large selection of inks – the result is an extremely large library of colors. Just like you can be sure a Wendy’s hamburger in Alaska will taste the same as one in New York, a Pantone color is accurate from year to year and regardless of which printer runs it.

Conversion

So what happens when someone comes to us wanting to print a Pantone? Well, unlike most digital printers, our press is a multi-color press. Even though we stock CMYK, White (opaque) ink and PMS light gray, we can also order any Pantone color (except metallics). We can have up to 7 colors installed on our press at one time. This is a great solution if someone absolutely NEEDS to have a pantone ink.

However, sometimes it makes sense to convert the Pantone color to a CMYK value. Our press is calibrated to hit PMS colors as closely as possible. Still, CMYK is not capable of hitting every Pantone color. In that case we’ll look up the color on our Pantone Emulation Chart. Sounds fancy, and it is. This chart shows how the most common Pantone inks will look when printed using a CMYK model. It’s an easy way to see if the conversion will produce the right color or if we’ll need to adjust the mixture manually.
